Chapter Thirteen

MONSTROUS REVENGE

A couple of days later, nothing has happened to me. No bucket of wet paint tipping onto my head. No chocolate pudding in my shoes. No heart-shaped helium balloons that say Lily Loves Ethan delivered to school.

I’m starting to think that maybe Hannah has forgotten about her threat.

It’s school picture day, and so far I’ve changed my outfit about three times. At first, I tried a t-shirt with flared sleeves and a pair of jeans, then a teal dress, then a skirt, and now I’m back to jeans. Before breakfast, I read Mom’s latest text. She tells me she’s learning to be very careful about complimenting people in Morocco.

You’ll never believe what happened. I complimented this woman’s scarf yesterday. Immediately, she pulled it right off her neck and gave it to me! She insisted I keep it!

I think about what would happen at school if each time Keisha and I complimented each other, we had to give up that item. We’d be swapping clothes back and forth all of the time.

When I brush my teeth after breakfast, I notice the toothpaste is greener than usual after I spit it out.

“What’s this?” Inspecting my teeth, I see they’re green!

I spit again, and no matter how many times I rinse, my teeth stay green! Not just my teeth—my lips and tongue, too!

“Something happened to the toothpaste!” I shriek.

Hannah pokes her head into the bathroom. “Oh, really? Imagine that. Toothpaste messing up something.” She drums on her chin. “Hmmm. Like Oreos.”

“This is different!”

I start to say something more when Kimberly walks in.

“Girls, is there something wrong?” she asks.

Yes! I want to scream.

But I stop myself and press my lips together so she won’t notice the color.

If I tell on Hannah about this, she’ll tell on me about my Oreo escapade. With both of our warnings already, I don’t want to even think about what would happen.

Probably no phone for a week.

Or being grounded, which would mean no going to the Haunted House committee and no seeing Ethan.

I shake my head, lips held as tight as possible.

When I arrive at school, I see Reese and his friends huddled outside like penguins trying to shield themselves from the wind. Only it’s late September and we live in Washington and the wind is just a breeze, even if there is a slight chill to the air.

“Hey, it’s Magic!” shouts Jonah, nudging Reese.

When another one of Reese’s buddies shout out, “Magic!” I ignore him. Anyway, the last thing I need is for Reese or one of his pals to comment on my green mouth and lips.

At school, as much as I wipe my mouth, my lips still look very greenish. I pretty much stay quiet all day, pointing to my neck like I have a sore throat if anyone asks me a question.

For my school picture, I borrow some of Keisha’s colored lip gloss, and I don’t show my teeth. Despite the color of my tongue, which no one has seen yet, I think I’m looking almost okay.
